Why Bangers?

In class we were discussing food items that rose from times of war, and it brought the British ‘banger’ sausages to mind for me. Nowadays, the word is a piece of British slang that can be used to refer to almost any kind of sausage, and sometimes is paired with mashed potatoes. Many theories of the origins of this name point to meat rationing of the First World War, stating that the sausages often had a higher water content than usual. This resulted in the tendency for them to explode open as they were placed in a hot pan, earning then the title ‘bangers’.
